Palestine solidarity march in Newcastle calls for an end to violence in Gaza

Newcastle protestors call for end to middle-east conflict.

Protests resumed on Sunday 8th of February, renewing calls for an end to the war in Gaza and the West Bank. The demonstration was led by the Newcastle branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and saw activists march from Central Station to Grey’s Monument.

The rally came just weeks before the High Court ruled the government’s ban on Palestine Action unlawful. While the legal status of the group remains in uncertain and is pending government appeals, the ruling has provided a significant boost to local protestors who have faced heightened scrutiny.

Since the outbreak of the conflict in October 2023, Newcastle has seen continued protests and public unrest. Protests reached a climax when an on campus encampment disrupted university proceedings including wellbeing appointments and exams.

The conflict, now in its third year, has weighed heavily on certain groups and has led to an unprecedented rise in Antisemitism and Islamophobia across UK universities.
