Look beyond the screen for your next outfit

Often heralded as the best social media platform due to its distinct lack of the ‘like’ feature, Pinterest is the first port of call for fashion inspiration for many. But if you’re looking for some screen-free ways to find outfit ideas, here are four to get you started:
  1. Your peers

Analysing the styles of those that you spend every day with is one of the easiest ways to find outfit inspo. Try to steer clear of copying items exactly (which may not even be possible given the current popularity of second-hand shopping). Those you see regularly will be living in the same climate as you, and can give you weather-appropriate outfit ideas. Your peers are also likely to be leading a lifestyle similar to yours, making their outfits a more realistic guide than those on Pinterest - those stiletto boots you’ve been eyeing up may be gorgeous, but may not be the right shoe for an all-nighter at the library (don’t worry, I’m guilty of an unfeasible wish list as well).

  1. Magazines

The endpoint of magazines and their physical nature mean that you can revisit inspirational pieces with ease, and you don’t risk losing any fashion ideas you forgot to pin.

With the rise of the Internet, so came a downturn in popularity of physical media like magazines. There is a never ending explore home feed page on Pinterest, which may sound like an advantage over flicking through glossy magazine pages, but can in turn come with an overwhelming information overload in the form of clothes. The endpoint of magazines and their physical nature mean that you can revisit inspirational pieces with ease, and you don’t risk losing any fashion ideas you forgot to pin.

  1. In-person retail

Okay, this one might be a little niche and specific to me, but when I am at work and putting out stock, I come across cute items of clothing that I would never have thought to look at otherwise. Like the aforementioned magazines, in-person shopping seems to be less trendy due to the rise of online retailers - with people often popping in store to check if an item they’ve already seen on social media is available. But even if you don’t work in retail, don’t abandon the outfits put together in shop windows and displays as inspiration; the visual merchandising team work hard!

  1. Your own wardrobe

Clothes are like a deck of cards - there are infinite ways to shuffle them around.

Perhaps the most obvious choice of them all, but when fast fashion brands drop new styles on a daily basis, and convince us we need new clothes, we can sometimes forget about the pieces we already own. Clothes are like a deck of cards - there are infinite ways to shuffle them around. Our own clothes will already be tailored to our preferred colours/ patterns/ silhouettes, which will make matching different pieces together a breeze. An evening of playing dress up can supply you with new outfit combinations, without buying a single new item.
