Why can’t it just be you and me
Arms interlinked
Stumbling through space together
Clutching desperately at your palm
I knew it wouldn't last forever
For now we have been cruelly parted
Two moons spiralling out here in the inky black alone
It’s not the same
Seeing your distorted features balancing against my tea-stained mug
I butter toast mindlessly
Listening to your stories of faceless people
Flickerings of our life before
A warped and misshapen universe
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
You whisper kindly
I give a vague smile
Tear-stained cheeks tight and raw
Hidden behind false contentment and jammy crumbs
If only you knew
How my world does crumble
When you are absent from my air
The stars ablaze with shimmering hues
Wink encouragingly
As my body aches to snatch you back
And stamp out the threat of what we call life.
