She dreams too big,

This little girl with skin the colour of the earth,

The plants had confused her for their home,

In her warmth, they found comfort.

Yet in a room full of people she would find herself alone.

-

Her skin told a story that they could not understand,

A map of stolen treasures, taken from a broken land.

This little girl with hair so wild and free

She is lost without a home, stranded in the sea.

-

This little girl who dreamed of a life beyond fate.

She found escape in the abyss of her mind.

Yet her dreams would often dissipate,

They would get lost where she could not find.

-

A foot neither here nor there,

Her mind seems to be as crazy as the curls of her hair.

Oh, darling girl, where do you belong?

Why is it that you sing such a bemused song?

-

She stands alone,

Her sari torn between two worlds,

She is tired of not belonging,

She wants to be found.

This little brown girl who feels unbound.
