Newcastle and our University have many on offer. The University itself offers a support and advice hub that gives students an opportunity to speak to a member of the welfare team, seeking advice or being referred to other services.
The University’s LGBTQ+ Safe Space also provides an accepting, respectful, and safe environment for LGBTQ+ students. The space also has signposting to the University’s other avenues of support.
The organisation James’ Place is also available in Newcastle and the North-East. Newcastle University stated that its opening ‘marks a significant milestone in the city’s commitment to mental health support’. The organisation provides mental help support to men in distress. It was founded in order to lessen the damage of the male suicide crisis and remove the social stigma surrounding men seeking mental health support.
Importantly, we can also ensure that the existing spaces we use become and remain positive. Actively encouraging those around us to talk about their problems, however big or small they may be, will help to destigmatise men’s mental health and break down toxic ideas that have been causing harm for far too long.
