After the huge success of Big Little Lies season one in 2017, fans had been eagerly waiting to hear whether the story would continue. With it being originally billed as a seven episode miniseries, a continuation of the mystery drama was not expected.

Our wishes were answered when HBO eventually renewed it for a second season after the popularity of the show and the demand from fans to continue it. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Golden Globe and Emmy award winning series.

Meryl Streep is joining the cast for the new season

Avoiding any spoilers for those of you yet to watch season one, the initial story follows the troubled lives of three women, played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley. They navigate the world of parenthood and relationships, all getting mixed up into a murder investigation. The mystery drama was compelling from start to finish with compelling performances from each of them, along with Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgard and Adam Scott.

All of these roles are expected to be reprised in one way or another in the upcoming season which will consist of seven new episodes. Oscar-winning and well-loved actress Meryl Streep is joining the Big Little Lies cast for the new season, adding another huge name to the already stellar cast. As with the first season of Big Little Lies, it will be co-produced by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

Fans and critics are sure that the next instalment will be snapping up more awards after its release. The preview trailer for the new season was shown at the Golden Globes, if you can call it a trailer. It is a quick three second clip that shows Meryl Streep’s character, along with the main group of characters from the first season. The preview suggests that it will pick up right after the twist of season one, so if you have yet to binge it, get on it now.

The first season is a ride of emotions, heartache and mystery and is absolutely deserving of the hype it has received. The release date is expected in June of this year but no final date has been released yet. Keep your eyes out for a full trailer dropping soon. Fans are hopeful that the next instalment will be just as shocking. If we learnt anything from season one, it is to expect the unexpected.
