Having just made the cut in BBC Music’s Sound of 2017 list, this could be one of the last few opportunities to see the The Amazons play for under a tenner. In fact you may have already read about them in the even more prestigious Courier Sounds of 2017

Considering previous BBC Sound of… members have included the like of Chvrches, HAIM, George Ezra and Ella Eyre, it is starting to seem more and more inevitable that the Reading four-piece are destined to hit the big time. Resembling The Vaccines both musically and in appearance The Amazons, with their long hair, leather and denim jackets and classic, catchy indie rock guitar, have all right tools up their sleeve to become a household name within a few years. In fact their current critical acclaim is not new; the likes of BBC, Capital Radio and XFM have been sniffing around them for a couple of years now, but it has been since their support of The Kooks in Germany last year that made people really sit up and take notice.

"If anyone deserves to break into the spotlight it is Matt and his band mates"

I have in fact known lead singer Matt Thompson since 2012, a former work colleague at our local pub tucked away in the sleepy Berkshire countryside, and I remember him talking about how he wanted to make it big with his band, who were then known simply as Peers (a nod to the fact they went to school together). I also remember thinking ‘fat chance’ at this bold claim, but if anyone deserves to break into the spotlight it is Matt and his band mates, who have simply not given up in their goal to make music. Highlighted by the fact the project nearly folded after the loss of their old drummer, Peers still mercilessly plugged away, touring all over the country to get noticed - and after uncovering new drummer Joe Emmett, coming back stronger under the new name, The Amazons.

Having watched them back in the early days for free at The Purple Turtle in Reading, I cannot urge you enough to go and see a band that one day could be headlining venues a lot bigger than Think Tank!
