Oren Brown hopes that this upcoming Star Wars Holiday Special usurps 1978's

The Star Wars Holiday Special of 1978 is probably one of the worst things recorded for entertainment purposes, ever. It was so poorly received that, hilariously, it has never been rebroadcast or released on home video. Now, four decades later, a Lego satirisation of the anti-classic has arrived; and it’s just what we need in 2020.

Following on from a disappointingly sloppy conclusion to the Skywalker Saga in 2019, there is some leftover limelight available for Lego Star Wars - and plenty of material to satirise. While The Mandalorian, the current Star Wars flagship show, strives to be a gritty sci-fi spaghetti-western, Lego’s new offering is something a little bit different.

Having produced several miniseries and short films in the past, the Holiday Special might be Lego Star Wars’ most ambitious foray into film-making, but it is not their first. In fact, Lego and Star Wars have a colourful history of collaboration together, so much so that the partnership is almost recognisable as a standalone brand.

Beginning with Lego playsets in the 90s and evolving into an iconic video game series, Lego Star Wars has established itself a familiar, unavoidably likable identity. Pure unadulterated silliness, sharp self-awareness - and a complete willingness to make fun of itself. Without losing the magic of the original universe, Lego Star Wars adds a new level of charm and humour that can be appreciated by adults and children alike.

As an otherwise exhausting year comes to its end, Star Wars-themed absurdity might be just what we need to salvage some fun and festivity. Don’t watch the Holiday Special expecting a cinematic masterpiece - if you’re a Star Wars fan, you’d likely be used to disappointment on that front by now. Do, however, set yourself up for some stress-free craziness that will undoubtedly brighten up your day.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is available to watch on Disney+ from November 17th.
