Are we ready to see the live-action version of The Little Mermaid? Will this film keep that same authenticity of the original 1989 Disney classic?

In the month of September the Official teaser trailer for The Little Mermaid live-action was released, racking up more than 20 million views and a million plus likes on Disney’s YouTube channel. The reproduction of the original film, has many hoping it will capture the timeless aura of the beloved 1989 The Little Mermaid.

After several live-action recreations of Disney films being made, many have been anticipating the announcement of The Little Mermaid. The first look into the new Disney film has caused mass circulation around the internet and some discussion of taboo topics. Many of the viewers have had positive reactions to the change in ethnicity for the character ‘Ariel’. A lot of fans who are pro-diversity, are making this teaser go viral on platforms such as TikTok, and promoting the diverse representation in this new Disney live-action. The buzz surrounding The Little Mermaid (2023) has many fans excited, however will this Disney film live up to the hype? And will fans of The Little Mermaid 1989 version be disappointed with the lack of ‘authenticity’?

"The 2023 edition has a lot of pressure to deliver this same element of romance with the new generation of young girls"

The defiant, fiery, redhead Ariel longs to find out more about what life is like above the sea. However, being the youngest of King Triton's daughters, naturally he feels obligated to protect the 16-year-old from harm. Meaning he forbids her to go anywhere near land, let alone near humans. The infamous love story captivated its young audience, the majority being young girls, with the idea that "love conquers all."

The 2023 edition has a lot of pressure to deliver this same element of romance with the new generation of young girls, who have been brought up around high quality films, and TV shows. The idea of Disney trying to create that wow-factor, has many fans speculating whether the development of the diversity will be able to display this. Bashers of the trailer have highlighted the lack of iconic bright red hair which Ariel is known for. So the questions is, will Disney correct this mistake in their final release of the 2023 film? Or will they let down their Disney fans?
