The marathon Director’s Cut of DC Comics’ Justice League is almost here, throwing out the shoddily reshot 2017 film and bringing director Zack Snyder’s original cut (and a few new gems) out of storage to hopefully restore the League to their former glory.
Released on February 14th, a date of significance given the original cut of Justice League reaching a gargantuan 214 minute runtime, the new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a showcase of previously unseen footage from 2016 and brand new scenes filmed in 2020.
These extra gems include CGI-filled shots of the hellscape planet of Apokolips, the DC Comics home of intergalactic megalomaniac Darkseid, flanked by his goons DeSaad and Granny Goodness. Originally, Darkseid and the residents of Apokolips were to serve as string-pullers in the original cut of Justice League in 2017, orchestrating the invasion of Earth by Ciaran Hinds’ (Game of Thrones, Rome) Steppenwolf.
It should be said – Zack Snyder’s Justice League is practically a brand new movie.
When disgraced director Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) was brought on to reshoot the 2017 movie after Zack Snyder left due to a personal family tragedy, over 3 hours of pre-visualised footage was archived and never released. This includes scenes of Darkseid, Ray Fisher’s (True Detective) Cyborg, Henry Cavill’s (Mission Impossible: Fallout) Superman and almost every character in the original cut. It should be said – Zack Snyder’s Justice League is practically a brand new movie.
The trailer ends with one of the most anticipated new scenes from the Snyder Cut, the return of Jared Leto’s (Dallas Buyers Club) Joker in a dusty wasteland. Drastically restyled from his debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Joker turns to Batman and says, “We live in a society…where honour is a distant memory.” Playing on the popular ‘We live in a society’ meme, it is ironic that the most infamously disliked portrayal of the Joker is one of the things fans anticipate most about Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Notably absent from the original 2017 movie and continuing the ‘Knightmare’ plotline from 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, this post-apocalyptic future will serve as Batman’s (Argo’s Ben Affleck) premonition of what the world may look like after Darkseid invades. This brand new scene is also set to feature the return of Joe Manganiello’s (True Blood) Deathstroke and Amber Heard’s (Aquaman) Mera.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will release worldwide on March 18th via on-demand, digital download and streaming.
