If you’re lucky enough to have never come across the name ‘Olympia Anley’ while scrolling through TikTok, you have missed out on possibly the most tone-deaf speech I have ever seen. The 20-year-old British influencer who looks and sounds like exactly what you picture when I say the words ‘rah girl’ has shut down her TikTok account after receiving criticism for posting a video discussing a woman’s food basket in a supermarket (which was presumably a Waitrose). The video, captioned ‘big pharma has put us out of touch with our bodies’, involves Anley sat in front of the camera sipping lemon water, which I’m sure is jam-packed full of nutrients to power up her energy for her bi-annual skiing holidays, expressing her self-proclaimed “snobbiness” surrounding other people’s food shops. She experienced utter shock and horror when she witnessed a woman in the supermarket “loading on junk food”, a category which, according to her, white bread falls into. White. Bread.
The video begins with her warning those watching that she “doesn’t want to offend anyone” with her words, roughly 30 seconds before she rips into a stranger for buying white bread, crisps and pot noodles- God forbid they’re not organic. Anley, because I simply can’t bring myself to call an actual human being ‘Olympia’, explained that the woman might have been having a party and not consuming all the food herself, claiming that there was “no judgement” towards this woman as she “does not know her personal situation”. The woman was also buying “a whole load of medicine” according to Anley, which caused her to come to the conclusion that people should be focussing more on preventing illness with their diet rather than masking their symptoms with medicine, an argument that makes sense until you remember that not everyone can afford a nutritious diet. It’s almost as if there’s a crippling cost of living crisis going on in this country. I think the fact that some people have to choose between heating their homes and eating could send Anley into a coma, but since she’s “treating the cause” by sipping lemon water, I’m sure she’s achieved immortality by this point. It really is fascinating how tories will blame anyone but the government for things they can’t understand. The blame placed on ‘big pharma’ completely ignores the issue of food poverty in Britain, and how it comes down to the billionaires running the country who couldn’t care less about poor people. So until tories aren’t running the country, I solemnly pledge to keep eating white bread and pot noodles in honour of the nation’s rah girl population.
