Upon its release, Sam Fender took to social media to release a statement on the fresh single:
“‘Remember My Name' is a love song I wrote for my late grandparents. When my grandma was in a home, she had dementia and my granddad went in there every day to visit her. He would tell her stories and try to coax her memory out of her and get her to remember things. They were always so fiercely proud of our family so I wrote this song in honour of them from the perspective of my granddad.”
“To thеm, it's a council house, to me, it's a home / And a homе that you made where the grandkids could play / But it's never the same without you”
Sam Fender on 'Remember My Name'
‘Remember My Name’ is the final glimpse before the complete People Watching album is released on Friday. Despite all four singles so far proving that Sam Fender is an ever-growing artist, the melancholic streak in his discography is ever so obvious. Parallels can be drawn to as early as his first album with ‘Leave Fast’, a song which also touches on the bittersweet memories of family and childhood.
On the 'Remember My Name', Fender’s voice is complimented by an orchestra which plays along only subtly in the background, giving centre-stage to his poetry. Fender’s powerful words paint a picture of love, tarnished by time, but never in doubt, fluid lyrics that many devoted fans have found themselves relating to. ‘Remember My Name’ is a story that revolves around dementia, yet it is generally nostalgic and reminiscent of the past and a heartbreaking listen.
The music video features Geordie star Dave Johns and serves as the perfect visual complement to Fender’s words. Overall, this new Sam Fender track, while one that may not wheedle casual listeners into devoted fans, is a perfect example of Fender’s extraordinary storytelling and musical ability and serves as a great anticipator of what is to come on Friday.
