Lovers of really fast hedgehogs rejoice. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has finally hit the big screen and delivers even more fun, easter eggs and bad jokes than the first. What a glorious time to be alive.
The sequel to the Oscar snubbed 2019 film that surprised everyone by not being shite, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 ups the ante even more with a slew of new characters, specifically Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessy). Returning is Ben Schwartz’s Soni-I mean Blue Justice, Donut Lord James Marsden and Jim Carrey’s Dr Eggman, in a role that many are rumouring will be his last.
I’d explain the plot but I would be able to do its majesty justice, and it isn’t all that important to the experience. Also, I forgot.
It's clear everyone has a blast making this
It is clear that everyone involved had a blast making this. Corny humour, over the top action scenes and enough Jim Carrey-ness to warrant another Grinch film will ensure a joy-filled ride from start to finish. The lighting in the bottle that made the first so surprisingly good has been harnessed here and accentuated by a cherry-picking of the best bits of the game franchise, to sometimes ridiculously fantastic extremes.
The perpetually sexy James Marsden is only rivalled by the overwhelmingly lustful tones of Knuckles’ actor Idris Elba who, despite his best efforts, did in fact play the red echidna sexy. Tails actor Colleen O'Shaughnessy makes a welcome and triumphant return to the role from her time in the video game series, adding a level of authenticity and charm to the film. In his first sequel role since Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), Jim Carrey is as enjoyable as ever with his over the top physical brand of acting being made full use of whenever on screen. His sexual tension with underling Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) remains one of the best parts of this series.
There is more than enough for those who were fans of the games
Epic fights that reference the games, dialogue that references the games, and props that reference the games ensure that there is more than enough content for those who are...fans of the games. But if you aren’t a fan of the games or hadn’t even heard of this blue porcupine before Ben Schwartz took control of its vocal cords, fear not for the references merely accent an already super enjoyable film!
If you go into Sonic The Hedgehog 2 expecting the next A24 film, you may not get the experience you were hoping for, but you’ll definitely get an experience. Good or bad, that is entirely up to you.
