It has been a year since the Russian army invaded Ukraine and, broadly speaking, the West has committed itself to supporting Ukraine militarily. This includes all of the major NATO allies like the US, the UK, and France. The European Union has also decided to end its dependence on cheap Russian energy and become more self-sufficient.

Looking at the current state of the British economy, it's fair to say that its struggling, and that spending money on the military to support Ukraine will not incentivise consistent economic growth. Due to the cost of living crisis, British citizens are facing serious financial issues, and so this is not the perfect time to prioritise providing Ukraine with extended support such as ground deployment of troops. A few weeks ago, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that he will further strengthen the UK's aid to Ukraine by sending tanks and self-propelled artillery, along with continued diplomatic support. Moreover, the government has also decided to provide advanced training to the Ukrainian military.

It's been more than a year since Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine, and the Russian war strategy has been a failure

Many predicted, that because of the vast size of the Russian army and its high-end equipment, that Russia could subdue and conquer Ukraine within a few days of the invasion. But it's been more than a year since the invasion, and the fact that the Russian soldiers have stilled failed to occupy Kyiv and topple Zelensky's government demonstrates that the Russian war strategy has failed. The British government should focus on stabilising the economy and further reducing its energy dependence on Russia.

In the end, war causes death, economic misery, and geopolitical instability. The British government has shown its sympathy and to date has provided the Ukrainian army with all of the support that it can. The UK should ensure that this continues.
