Winter months can be hard and dreary, without the added grief of losing someone you love. So what can you do this Christmas to commemorate them?
  • Watch their favourite film, or listen to their most played song. Perhaps, there was a film you always watched together during the season – or maybe all year round. But by continuing to do these traditions it could help you feel less alone and maybe help to relive memories that were shared together.
  • Spend as much time with family and friends as possible. Grief can make you feel lonely, so try and arrange little dates with people to keep you busy and avoid feeling overwhelmed with loneliness. It might help to do the above with someone else, which can make the activity more uplifting.
  • Create a new decoration. When decorating your room or Christmas tree, why not print out a photo of them and put it in a bauble, or simply hang it on a wall or a desktop. Alternatively, why not reuse some of their old decorations? Maybe they had their own fancy tinsel that you could put on the tree, in their absence. If they had a favourite jumper/sweater they wore every Christmas day without fail, why don’t you wear that instead?
  • Most importantly, as well as remembering all their/your shared traditions, create new ones for yourself – or with a friend. Maybe try something new this year - why not have a vegan Christmas Dinner instead? Or send post cards rather than cards? This will seem difficult but once you do something for you, it will make the season more uplifting as you’ll discover new activities to do.

Remember that though you feel alone, you aren’t. There are people who love you and will want to make sure that you’re okay this Christmas. Reach out to friends and family as much as you can, and there’s always the wellbeing centre located in King’s Gate if you want more help.
