Spring has sprung

“Although spring may not have lived up to your BBQ and bare legs expectations so far, it is the perfect time to dip your toe into SS16’s biggest trends”

Spring has sprung, although apparently this news is yet to reach Newcastle where the climate has been one of gale force winds, torrential rain and even snow(?!) for the past week. With such unpredictable weather, nailing transitional dressing can be a nightmare. Hindered too by the fact you probably left all of your warmest clothes at home over Easter under the naive assumption that summer term would feature some actual sun. There are, however, some clever ways you can break from the shackles of your winter wardrobe and put a ‘spring’ into your step.

The only way to combat both potential frostbite on journeys to 9ams and heat exhaustion by 4pm is to turn to your old friend: layers. While thermals don’t scream sex appeal, they do allow you to wear your favourite spring looks whilst sneakily keeping cosy. UNIQLO have a wide range of affordable thermals, which have been designed by really clever people that probably did STEM degrees, meaning that not only will they keep you toasty warm, they’re super thin too. Perfect for layering! Team with a thin jumper and finish with with a light jacket such as a bomber that can easily be stuffed into your bag at the first sight of sunshine.

Another great way to transition your wardrobe is through colour. Instead of reaching for your trusty black jeans and navy jumpers, try adding a pop of vibrancy. Deep fuchsias and bright oranges may seem scary, but when toned down with neutrals can work really well (and will come in handy should a freak blizzard hit the toon). If you’re not feeling quite so daring however, go for pastels instead, which can easily be paired with grey and navy winter knitwear for some transitional perfection.

In the wise words of Miranda Priestly, “Florals? For spring? Ground breaking” so try branching out with other styles of pattern instead. Throw it right back to your primary school days and emulate that classic summer dress look. Gingham is all over the high street at the moment, most notably in Zara who have a huge collection of shirts, dresses and skirts that will take you back to your playground days.

The 90s look dominated much of the colder seasons, and this is a trend that isn’t likely to change. Swap out your old boyfriend jeans for a pair of Topshop’s girlfriend fit, and made with a thinner cotton than their predecessors they’re perfect for Spring. Alternatively dust off your ripped jeans, which you can hopefully now wear without the fear of shivering blue knees. If jeans aren’t your style, go for a denim skirt instead, perfect for both day and night they really are a staple item. If you cant brave bare legs just yet, pair it with some thick tights and your comfiest trainers for that classic 90s vibe.

Although spring may not have lived up to your BBQ and bare legs expectations so far, it is the perfect time to dip your toe into SS16’s biggest trends, and after all, if we can’t moan about the rubbish weather then what can we do?
