Negotiations between Spurs and Conte developed rapidly, with the Italian sealing a contract up to June 2023. It was speculated that Conte was keen on a move to Manchester United in light of the potential sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs Managing Director of Football, Fabio Paratici ‘wanted him since June and changed Conte’s mind.’
Despite receiving the Manager of the Month award in August, amid a promising start to the season for Spurs, Nuno was sacked after a brief period of four months at the helm. There was a less than promising 53% win rate after 17 games in charge.
Although Mauricio Pochettino yielded a similar record in his opening ten games in charge as Spurs manager, it is perhaps the manner of defeat and the style of play which has driven Levy and the board to part ways with the former Wolves boss. Given his rather conservative style of play, he may have potentially been restricting the likes of Kane and Son from flourishing, which is imperative to their challenge for European football.
Tottenham fans should revel in this appointment given the Italians exemplary managerial record across multiple leagues.
Within his two year tenure at Chelsea, Conte was victorious as Premier League Champion and FA cup winner with the blue side; yet most recently taking Inter Milan to Italian title champions last season.
Spurs have appointed a serial winner in the 52 year old, who possesses an illustrious career both as a player and a coach, with profound tactical knowledge and a distinctive style of play with his trademark three at the back system.
It is inevitable that Conte will transform Spurs from their current lack lustre side into a stronger, more expansive unit. Hopefully, he'll also be able to revive the form of Harry Kane, akin to the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa who revelled under the guise of the Italian's experience.
