Current COVID-19 restrictions in the UK mean it is prohibited to travel anywhere without a legally permitted reason, yet many are hopeful for international travel to resume in time for this year’s summer holidays.

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement that all restrictions will end by the 21st of June, holiday company TUI reported a 500% increase in bookings overnight. Airbnb have also vocalised their prediction of a significant post-lockdown travel rebound but claim many will be opting for staycations (allowed from April 12th with members of your own household) rather than international travel this year.

With the 10-day hotel quarantine period on return from red-listed countries still being imposed, it’s likely that many tourists will ditch the weekend breaks, travel to destinations further away and stay abroad for longer to make it more worthwhile or even travel domestically to avoid the quarantine completely.

The top 3 emerging foreign destinations for post-lockdown travel according to a survey conducted by Expedia are The Maldives, French Polynesia and Barbados, and whilst a student loan might not get us to the Caribbean, EasyJet and Ryanair still have some bargain flights to Europe on offer!

Additionally, people who have received the COVID vaccine could soon be given more freedom to travel with the Prime Minister confirming on the 8th of March that vaccine passports will be ‘a feature of our life in the future’. The new vaccine passport app is due to be ready in weeks - this could be the chance of getting some sun many Brits are desperate for!

However, given that Boris Johnson’s announcement on the 17th May is liable to change and travel insurance that will provide cover in the case of another national lockdown does not exist, perhaps it is a bit premature to be booking holidays abroad yet.
