As the Oscars approach, us Brits set the bar high by assembling our own, classier, version of the celebrations for films of 2018 with the annual BAFTA’s. The prestigious event held last Sunday, had a wave of home-grown talent in attendance with many strutting the Royal Albert Hall red carpet in style.
The Favourite became the standout by living up to its name and securing monumental success that did not transpire however to its cast’s attire for the evening. While most were admittedly, okay; actress Rachel Weisz appeared in a flurry of cream Gucci gown with an off the shoulder cut all together as bonkers as the film she won for. While my favourite of worst dressed saw acting film designer, Sandy Powell, wearing a Beetlejuice inspired pin stripe button suit that, as you can imagine, was even more startling than her orange hair.
Highlights however saw the Duchess of Cambridge resonate princess in a white Alexander McQueen design, tastefully decorated with an arrangement of flowers upon the shoulder in an otherwise simple style that presented the royal resident’s natural beauty and ensured eyes were on the earrings, a possession of the late princess Diana’s.
Meanwhile actress Lily Collins went bold during her first BAFTA appearance wearing a Givenchy haute couture deep blue gown, fashioned with flowers upon a net skirt and adorned with a cropped suit jacket. The A-line gown was distinct while mature; much like the roles the actress has been finding herself in as of late.
Similarly choosing the bright and bold route, break out star Yalitza Aparicio-of Netflix original Roma-wore a red gown oddly similar to the maroon carpet beneath her feet. Regina King meanwhile, walked the carpet in a gown that managed to match her, more than the floor, in a fuchsia pink Versace dress. Decadent and sophisticated, the simple style and daring thigh-high side slit, managed to become a standout of elegant fashion on display.
And not only did Letitia Wright, star of Black Panther, take home the only audience chosen award of the night, her white Stella McCartney tailored power suit ensemble won us over too. The monochromatic pairing was not to be outdone however by star of Bohemian Rhapsody Rami Malek, looking magnifico in a white suit and black undershirt.
Suits were everywhere this year with supermodel Irina Shayk juxtaposing in a black plunging pairing by Burberry alongside husband, Bradley Cooper, also wearing a suit- however one that covered just a little more.
