Things I wish I knew before I went to Switzerland

Switzerland – known for its picturesque mountains, chocolate, and clear blue waters. Here’s what I wish I’d have known before I got there.

  1. Switzerland is very expensive

When I decided I was going on an interrail trip, Switzerland was one of the first places that popped into my head as a key destination. Unfortunately, the amount of time I’d planned to stay there, which was a great portion of my trip, did not equate to the amount of money I was hoping to spend. To combat this, I would recommend eating mostly from supermarkets, especially if the hostel or hotel you’re staying at has a shared kitchen. Even fast-food chains like McDonalds and Burger King are pretty extortionate over there. If you really, really want to try some fondue then absolutely go for it, and the chocolate shops are worth the hole in your wallet, but you should save your money for the experiences! When you’re looking back on your trip, are you going to be thinking about all your restaurant meals, or about the cool stuff you did? Get a boat trip, not a big mac.

2. Unpredictable weather

As I was travelling mid-September, it was the end of the peak season, so things were a little cheaper than they would have otherwise been. However, the weather was also fairly unpredictable. In Bern, I was caught in torrential rain. In Interlaken, a thunderstorm. In Lucerne, the weather was too cloudy to climb the mountain we had set out to. Nevertheless, plans were adapted, and I still had an amazing time, but it is definitely essential to bring a waterproof because you just never know! Plus, bad weather is an excellent excuse to sit and watch the rain inside with some chocolate-covered strawberries.

3. Swiss Lakes

Last but certainly not least, visiting Switzerland can be shocking in that the water is so blue. This is especially shocking if you’re from the UK, as we are used to the government dumping waste there. Not in Switzerland. The lakes are a bright turquoise colour, and it’s not just because it’s extremely clean. Some of their lakes are actually formed from melted glaciers, the colours coming from small glacier particles that sink to the bottom at a slow pace, giving light to the azure and sapphire shades of the water!
