Last week, indie royalty Circa Waves dropped the newest of a string of singles from their upcoming album, What’s it like over there ?. ‘Times won’t change me now’ feels like a break away from their typical sound, perhaps best heard in tracks like t-shirt weather and fossils which formed a crucial part of my playlist last summer.
Their usual guitar-oriented sound is tipped on its head in favour of an unexpected fuse of choir and piano to make a surprisingly addictive song. The track opens with an almost blues-esque riff followed by the drum beat which forms the song’s backbone. As it builds, the song begins to feel passionate, due to the strong performance of lead singer Kieran Shudall and the warm gospel backing vocals which are delightfully unexpected. It’s undeniable repetition of the lyric ‘times won’t change me now’ has you singing along to the chorus on your first listen.
The track shows an almost experimental approach to their new music and its soulful vibe suggests a maturity and growth as a band. Now with a quartet of songs already out from their upcoming album, Circa Waves are setting the bar high ahead of its release in April.
