‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ is just the first of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books set to appear on our screens, with the TikTok phenomenon ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ also in the process of being adapted for the big screen. So, what makes these books so attractive to producers?
I think what Jenkins Reid does so well is create a complex and ever-developing world in which all her characters exist together. Though each of her books is to be treated as a stand-alone, the way in which they reference one another, as well as the cameos of characters across texts, involves readers in a sort-of treasure hunt. Even if this does mean we have to tolerate the insufferable Mick Riva in each of the books, I think this allows readers to really engage in the world and feel as though the characters and events are a part of our own reality.
For me, the Jenkins Reid universe appeals to an innate fascination with the distant and dazzling world of celebrities and stardom. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo in particular perfectly captures glamorous Hollywood life, threaded with the layers of imperfection and heartbreak within. Evelyn Hugo’s character is carefully built to reflect emotions and human experiences we can all relate to, whilst also maintaining her status as a captivating figure of intrigue.
For the upcoming adaptations of Daisy Jones and Seven Husbands to be as successful as the books, it is essential for them to capture the fascinating allure of Hollywood that is so effective in drawing people’s attention. Hopefully, they are able to live up to the marvel of the Taylor Jenkins Reid universe!
