Wednesday 25th October brought a comfortable 3-0 home win to Team Newcastle, showing little mercy to the newly promoted Manchester side. Following an unsteady 3-2 victory against Leeds in their previous match Newcastle were determined to make things a little easier for themselves.

Set 1 certainly showed the quality that Newcastle had to offer. Disciplined defence and aggressive offense kept Manchester at bay. Consistent and tough serving proved to be difficult for the Manchester side to deal with, allowing many aces to be scored. This great play from the team continued throughout the set making way for a 25-10 first set win for Newcastle.

After a very confident first set many changes were made to Newcastle’s starting six, giving players with less match experience game time so they could show their ability under pressure. Manchester only managed to bring 6 players meaning tiredness began to set in, only to the advantage of Newcastle. The now under-experienced Newcastle side certainly showed they deserved to be on court, starting the set with a 7-0 lead. A few hitting and passing errors this set allowed Manchester to secure a few more points but Newcastle were able to comfortably take the set 25-14.

The final set nearly played out identically to the second set. The same starting six cruised through showing great strength in all parts of the game and at 22-14 it looked as though Newcastle were quickly going to snatch the 3 points. This seemed to get to the heads of the players, and many attacking errors later the score stood at 23-21 to Newcastle and 1 Manchester point away from many substitutions being made. Fortunately, the attackers became more intelligent and with a couple block wipe-offs Newcastle took the final set 25-21 and therefore the game.

A great start to the season for Newcastle Men’s volleyball with two wins under their belt out of a possible two. This puts them in great stead for the journey to a history making promotion, as it would be the first time ever a Newcastle men’s volleyball team have made it into the premier division.
