The final three of I’m a Celeb 2020 were Giovanna Fletcher, Jordan North and Vernon Kay. Honestly, they were my top three from the start (except Mo Farah, I loved him), so I was extremely relieved to see them on the final day of camp. Jordan North and Giovanna Fletcher were the fan favourites, with lots of people wanting Jordan to win because of his clear personal growth through the show. From throwing up on the first episode when he had to climb down a cliff to conquering his fears of small spaces and snakes, he really came out of the camp as a changed man. However, Giovanna was also in the winning league because she was bubbly and optimistic throughout, with fans loving that she picked S Club 7’s 'Reach for the Stars' as one of her gifts from home.
Some disputed that Jordan had a much harder final trial of being locked in a coffin with fifty snakes for ten minutes
When the at-home voting placed Vernon in third place, the tension rose as fans had no idea who would win. After a nail-biting final two, Giovanna Fletcher was crowned the first Queen of the Castle (in the first ever I’m a Celeb set in Wales!) and whilst many fans were happy, others were disappointed because Jordan had such an intense personal growth through the show. Also, some disputed that Jordan had a much harder final trial of being locked in a coffin with fifty snakes for ten minutes, as opposed to eating more disgusting food.
Whilst Giovanna was lovely, she arguably had an unfair advantage because McFly fans were voting for her, especially as Dougie Poynter won I’m a Celeb in 2011 and Harry Judd won Strictly Come Dancing. When it comes down to voting, McFly fans are dedicated to letting their favourites win. Not only that, but Carrie Hope Fletcher, actress, singer and vlogger, was also highly promoting Giovanna on her social media.
Her warm personality shone in camp, and honestly gave me the optimism that 2020 has severely lacked
This then brings on the question: was Giovanna at an unfair advantage from the very beginning?
In my opinion, no. If fans wanted to vote for Jordan, they would have- he still came second! I think if Giovanna was a man, people wouldn’t be complaining as much. Giovanna herself has her own achievements and shouldn’t be critiqued because her family are also equally successful, she is on I’m a Celeb, after all. She may not have had as many trials as Jordan, but she played an important role within the camp, whether that was through giving moral support or being the cook for most nights. Her warm personality shone in camp, and honestly gave me the optimism that 2020 has severely lacked. Plus, is it a coincidence that many members of the camp as they were leaving also stated that they wanted Giovanna to win?
It isn’t just because of McFly’s success, it’s because of her own achievements and the constant smile on her face. Bow down to the Queen of the Castle.
