After a losing streak in the WVX, people are starting to question if the once unstoppable New Zealand Ferns are falling from the top.

The Black Ferns have suffered another blow at the hands of the almighty Red Roses after a 49 – 31 defeat earlier this month. Despite their status as world champions, the team appears to be running out of steam after having endured back-to-back defeats this WVX, losing to Ireland in their opening match before being thrashed once again by England. Could it be possible that New Zealand are falling off their throne?

It seems that England are sapping New Zealand of their power. While the Ferns are struggling to secure wins, the Roses continue to go from strength to strength as this most recent triumph over New Zealand marks their 19th consecutive win.

“For myself and the rest of the group there is not an aura around them that they are invincible” stated England captain Marlie Packer prior to the match at Vancouver. “We as a forward unit are as good as them and better than them.”

This mindset certainly seems to be working, as the Red Roses’ wicked back three of Kildunne, Dow and Breach continue to whip up a storm, with Breach crowned player of the match after her spectacular hat trick. It’s no wonder that England’s ladies are determined to defeat the Ferns – having taken home the World Cup six times at the expense of the Roses, Packer is adamant to break the pattern. Don’t be fooled however – New Zealand are far from broken, as their no. 8 Kaipo Olsen-Baker remains on top form and Maiakawanakaulani Roos scoring a sensational try.

How will the year pan out for the Black Ferns following these unprecedented defeats? Co-captain Ruahei Demant states “I think it is a bit more skill set and the good thing is you can teach skills.” With the Red Roses’ home World Cup fast approaching, they have the time to turn this around, but will they be able to keep up with the pace of England? Whatever happens, it’s going to be an interesting year for both teams.
