Chelsea have not been without change this season, introducing new manager Sonia Bompastor to replace the fearlessly ambitious Emma Hayes who helped Chelsea to five consecutive WSL wins. The team has showed resilience in this transitionary period, and it seems the best is still yet to come, a scary thought for the other WSL teams. Bompastor is making her mark too, becoming the first WSL manager to achieve seven consecutive wins from the start of the season, and she is not stopping there, aiming to remain unbeaten.
Despite the absence of Sam Kerr, Lauren James and Mia Fishel, Chelsea have maintained winning ways, their impressive squad depth shining through to keep the team at the top. On the pitch, Mayra Ramirez, alongside Guro Reiten are proving a handful for opposition defence. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd has also been a standout player, her speed and visionary style of play is a credit to the team. As a collective, Chelsea has experience of victory and knows what it takes, helping to fuel their refusal to be static, improving season on season. The tools and the talent to secure another WSL title are clear, exemplified in their ability to take chances, and deliver goals from a range of players, notably scoring five goals against Everton with five different goal scorers.
Chelsea’s defence are yet to be tested against the likes of Lauren Hemp who was absent from Chelsea’s match against Manchester City due to injury. Sitting second in the table, Manchester City are still in the running. Arsenal also cannot be ruled out for a comeback after a turbulent start to the WSL season. Historically they have established themselves as competitive rivals to Chelsea, beating them in the final of the FA Continental Cup in 2023 and 2024; we will see what Arsenal brings when facing Chelsea again later in the season. Brighton have also climbed up the league table and will be aiming to continue their good form into the second half of the season. Success in multiple competitions means a packed schedule for Chelsea which they will hope doesn’t inhibit their Women’s Super League campaign. As of now, Chelsea’s clinical and creative performances leave little room for doubt about who will claim the top spot. With their momentum as a great advantage, it seems there is no reason to place limits on what this team can achieve in the Women’s Super League this season.
