If you are just fascinated by the art that is live music, then look no further than these independent live music venues.
Kicking off this list is a locally run music, theatre and performing arts venue, situated on Newcastle’s St. James’ Blvd.
This is an affordable venue for students too with many of their performances running a ‘Pay what you feel’ policy. It also features a great Bar to grab a Bev before, during or after a performance.
So whether musical theatre or local independent artists are you thing, this places has everything you need for an affordable, intellectual (ish) night out on the Toon.
Avant-gardist, eclectic and electric. Next on the list is The Cluny, situated on Lime Street at the heart of Ouseburn.
If you’re looking for something exciting, fresh and dare I use the word funky, then The Cluny, located in a former flax spilling mill is the place to go. It’s also my personal favourite jaunt on the list.
The likes of Duffy, Arctic Monkeys, Kate Nash and Mumford & Sons have all played at this venue- which has a capacity of 300. Not only is it home to a great selection of artists but it is also home to a great selection of craft ales.
Originally opening as a Pop venue in 2013, Think Tank? has now become an iconic fixture in the local indie and rock music scene, finding a home within Digital located at the heart of Newcastle’s City Centre.
Dubbed as a little venue where big things happen, the likes of The 1975, Sam Fender and Wolf Alice have all set foot in this fantastic venue- which brings future sounds to the North East.
Something a little bit different here, as this is a community-owned pub on Railway Street just a few minutes away from the infamous Utilita Arena.
With a capacity of 150, the venue is best known for its unique atmosphere due to its jazz and disco focus. Acts such as POKE, Divine Intervention and No Fox have all performed there in recent times.
So if Jazz, Disco, Indie and Rock are favourites of yours get yourself down to The Globe for a real blend and mix of your favourite music.
Located in a former Fish Market on Newcastle’s iconic Quayside is this is arguably one of the North East’s most iconic independent live music venues.
Courtney Love and The Zombies are amongst artists who have set foot through the doors.
With a capacity of 1200 this is the largest venue on the list, it has a unique sound system and fantastic lighting which makes it a standout venue and one you should definitely try!
Last but by certainly no means least on the list is Little Buildings, situated on Stepney Bank. This, along with Alphabetti, is probably one of the most intimate venues on the list.
It is a great place for emerging and established artists to perform in, but specialises mainly on helping launch local bands such as Plastic Glass, Post Rome and Waves of Dread.
I have to say this is also one of my favourites on the list, as you’re also guaranteed a big dose of Geordie charm and talent (and brown ale) upon entry!
