After 6 FA Women’s Super League titles, 5 Women’s FA Cup trophies and 6 FA WSL Manager of the Season victories, Emma Hayes OBE will be departing from the role that made her the most prolific manager in Women’s Super League history at the end of the 23/24 season. With such success and a trajectory that prefigures so much more, the question must be posited: why is Hayes departing?

Initially leaving room for speculation in Chelsea’s departure statement, it has been confirmed that Hayes will become the new USWNT Head Coach. Hayes herself confessed that it is “probably the only job” that could tear her from her dynasty in Chelsea because, in her words, the USWNT is the “most incredible team in world football history.” Hayes’ managerial experience in the USA from 2001-2006, her enthusiasm for the country and her prowess in club football undoubtedly make her the most sought after candidate for the currently vacant role at the 4-time Women’s World Cup winners.

But for now, Hayes will be leading her unassailable team out for the remainder of this season, with the chance to achieve one of the most coveted trophies in world football; the Champions League – an unprecedented feat for Chelsea F.C. Women in their 31 year history.
