Anthony Taylor was demoted to the Championship on the 3rd of November after a controversial penalty decision for Newcastle allowed them to get ahead in a game against Wolves that ended 2-2. Just a week later, he was promoted back to the Premier League, to referee the Chelsea vs Manchester City match.

For Chelsea fans, this decision was an infuriating one. To bring back a referee whose decisions are constantly met with criticism, especially his decisions during Chelsea matches that have cost them very important games (Chelsea fans aren’t forgetting the 2019 FA Cup final against Arsenal anytime soon), seems like a very bad decision. Paired with the fact that the Championship game he refereed - Preston vs Coventry, also had a controversial penalty to Preston at the end of the first half, this seems not very well thought through. Whilst there was contact in the box which is what the decision was based on, the amount of contact and whether it impacted play has been debated.

During the Chelsea vs Manchester City game, there was one decision that was met with criticism: the Kyle Walker handball in the box in the 76th minute. Walker had his hand high in the air when the handball occurred and yet wasn't given a card at all. At the minimum, it should have been a yellow card, and Chelsea should have gotten a penalty. This missed decision could have changed the result of the game, which was still 3-3 at this point.

Should Anthony Taylor have been promoted back to the Premier League? Eventually, yes, but after a week? Absolutely not. With some much-needed training, he can be accepted as a Premier League referee who deserves to be there. For now, though, the Championship is a better fit for his ability.
