Towards the end of the Formula One winter break the news broke of Hamilton's departure from Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team in favour of the historic Scuderia Ferrari. There has never been a clear explanation behind Hamilton's motivations for the move, however, team principle Toto Wolff expressed his belief on the move "He needed a new challenge, he was looking for a different environment" and that "You need to ask Lewis why he changed his mind" after explaining Hamilton and the team were well aligned at the end of the 2023 season. When asked, Wolff expressed that he believed Hamilton was "trying to give us a long time to decide what we want to do next year going forward". However, Hamilton himself has never given comment as to why he decided to make this move, simply thanking the team for their service across the eleven years he has been at the team and ensuring his dedication to them across the 2024 season. Though, as Wolff expressed, this does leave Mercedes in a position to fill the seat of the seven time champion by the end of the 2024 season. So, who are the teams options?

After the news broke, a wave of options were speculated across fans online, in person and commentators of the motorsport, each potential candidate having their positives and negatives outlined.

One of the first people to be postered as a replacement for Hamilton at the team was Williams Racing's Alex Albon. Albon was a favourite candidate of fans of the sport after his performance in the 2023 season, consistently out qualifying teammate Logan Sargeant and outperforming ex-teammate Latifi the year prior. His performance across the two years at Williams has without question highlighted Albon's commitment and capability to perform well for his team, providing hope that these skills could be transferable to Mercedes. Moreover, in the middle of the 2019 season, Albon was promoted to Red Bull along side Verstappen, although not performing at the Dutch drivers level, Albon gained a lifetime of appliable experience. However, fans hope for Albon to replace Hamilton along side friend George Russell has almost been entirely crushed when it was announced that the driver would be contracted to Williams until the end of 2025. Though, as Hamilton proved; release clauses are a viable option.

Another favourite is Formula One veteran Fernando Alonso. The two time world champion and current driver of Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, certainly has the experience the team may desire in absence of Hamilton, racing in Formula One since 2001. In fact, it is alleged that Alonso offered to drive for the team completely free during their 2014-2016 dominance. Although the oldest across the grid, there is no questioning if Alonso is still up to the job of driving for Mercedes, as 2009 world champion Jenson Button describes "The hunger is there. If the hunger is there, the fitness is there." In February of 2024, Wolff had been seen meeting with Alonso's manager, Flavio Briatore, which has only fuelled excitement.

Perhaps the biggest and most prevalent name to be thrown into the mix is current defending world champion Max Verstappen. Wolff claimed in light of Hamilton's move that "maybe it's a chance to do something bold." No bolder move than to sign Red Bull warrior Verstappen. The Red Bull driver's name has been mentioned next to the rival team in recent news as Jos Verstappen, father of Max, had repeated talks with Toto Wolff after the news regarding Christian Horner. Jos was reported saying "it's a bit too late" to draw a line under the situation. While some people may claim the three time world champion is completely loyal to the team, a sudden change may be exactly what Mercedes needs to return to its once former glory.

While Albon, Alonso, and Verstappen have been three prominent (and current) drivers lined up to replace Hamilton, there has been a further plethora of names thrown into the mix, both ex-Formula One, current Formula Two and even Formula One Academy drivers. Both former Red Bull drivers Daniil Kyvat and Sebastian Vettel, have both been discussed amongst fans of the sport as potential candidates, Vettel particularly being a favourite amongst the majority. Formula Two has also provided a roster of potentiality, after his debut in Saudi Arabia Ollie Bearman has proved he has a lifetime of talent to evolve and show. Similarly, Mercedes junior driver Kimi Antonelli has been questioned as up to the job, though fans wonder if the pressure could be too much. Finally, F1 Academy victor, Doriane Pin has been discussed online as an option for the team, would there finally be a woman amongst the grid?
