If you’re looking for a different type of fun evening, open mic nights have it all: exciting atmosphere, cool new music, a nice drink with friends. You can support local artists and be in the audience of the upcoming, off-the-beaten-track music scene. The night can go in whichever direction you choose; open mics are as suited to a cosy evening of live music as they are to getting some good tunes before the night out really begins.

And of course, if you’re any kind of performer, they’re your holy grail. Gig experience, a chance to test out new material, spreading your name and reputation, just for fun… There’s no real reason not to go. Particularly if you’re a performer in Newcastle, the Toon offers a great range of open mics for people to take to the stage. Some differ in style and convention though, so here’s a rundown of two of the best.

Freshly Squeezed at Cobalt Studios

Not even the sweetest Sicilian lemon could be fresher than the acts at this underrated venue in Ouseburn, appointed by me as the coolest club in town. Really, the Cobalt open mic nights are great. Jayne (aka Me Lost Me) leads the monthly sessions with a warm smile and friendly introductions, and the audience are so supportive that being at Cobalt feels like a big, guitar-shaped hug. Spectators are encouraged to keep quiet during the acts to help people feel at ease, as well as to make a donation to keep the whole thing possible. Which it definitely needs to be, because from the music to the people to the lighting, everything there is brilliant.

Tuesdays at Colonel Porter’s Emporium

Step inside this classy quayside bar/pub and be whisked away into a world of shining leather armchairs, intricate lampshades and dimmed red candles. The music fits perfectly to this vibe; from the mini podium by the door, guitarists, pianists and singers fill the room with soulful jazz or electrifying indie or classical so sweet you could bathe in it. Another bonus: performers get a free drink. If you want to have a chat with a sophisticated vibe and amazing background music, Colonel Porter’s is the place for you.

There are of course many more open mic nights in Newcastle, but here I've set the scene for two of my favourites. The time to try them out is now!
