Leeds is arguably the beating heart of the UK’s music scene and is about to say goodbye to one of their most iconic (and my favourite) venues - Boom Leeds. For locals like me, it is more than just another venue, it is a home for people who live and breathe metal, hardcore and punk to come together and surround themselves in an electric atmosphere. But now, as the venue prepares to close in March, I will reflect on what Boom meant to the metal community and discuss what its plans are for the future.

Initially starting as practice rooms, Boom has brought events, music, and culture to the Leeds nightlife scene since opening in 2011. It has become a staple in the city's nightlife, known for hosting both local and international artists, club nights, and more. For me, the intimate setting of Boom provides a one-of-a-kind connection between the bands and the crowd, creating a personal experience that larger venues sometimes lack. Additionally, the venue’s acoustics are tailored to the genre, creating an incredible sound. It is known for showcasing local talent alongside more established acts, giving up-and-coming bands the chance to share the stage with metal legends, further building the local scene. I have been to many memorable gigs at the venue, with notable performances from Loathe, Hail the Sun, Paleface Swiss, and Fleshwater, and every time I have left with a sense of exhilaration, like I have just been part of something bigger than myself.

Despite the venue’s popularity, earlier in 2024 Boom sadly shared on their social media that they will be shutting their doors in March 2025. The owners expressed that despite efforts to stay open, there have been “struggles with maintaining Boom whilst up against a global pandemic, increased costs, changes in the music industry and a cost-of-living crisis” and the building will be developed into flats and shops.

However, this is not the end! Boom has recently announced that they are moving to a new, larger location, continuing to offer support and promotion for its community. Due to dedicated fundraising from brands, promoters and customers since November, the venue has been able to raise £30,000. However, to sign for the new location they need to raise a further £52,000, which they are doing so through CrowdFunder, vinyl and tape sales, merchandise, and benefit gigs. For more information about how to support with fundraising for Boom’s new venue, make sure to visit the Boom Leeds website or to follow them on social media for updates.

For many, the announcement of Boom Leeds' closure marks the end of an era. But with the new plans on the horizon, we can hope that it will also be the start of a new chapter; one that will continue to provide out of this world experiences for the people of Leeds and beyond.
