On the 24th of February, Newcastle University’s Computing and Technology Society hosted a 24-hour Gameathon in the Urban Sciences Building, raising over £400 for charity. From board games to baking competitions, here’s everything they got up to.

The Gameathon kicked off at 1pm on Friday night, running all the way through until the same time on Saturday. Many participants came and went as the day went on, and some even stayed for the full 24 hours!

Tournaments were run all throughout the day on numerous games, such as Super Smash Bros, Wii Party, and weirdest of all, the Dr. Who Top Trumps game for the Wii. Board games were played too, with a Dungeons and Dragons board being set up for multiple campagins that were played during the event.

The Gameathon also featured a gaming-inspired baking competition, with a series of gaming-themed cakes brought in by visitors, from Mario to Minecraft. The cakes were all available to buy, along with a series of other items from the tuck shop.

I asked NUCATS’ Gaming Officer, Adam Sanderson, why they picked Guide Dogs as their charity to donate to. He told me: “Guide Dogs is a charity that I felt very strongly about supporting, as sight loss affects around two million people in the UK. The charity helps these people to live less lonely, less isolated lives which I feel is especially important after the impact of the pandemic. They’re helping people, of all ages, to live the life they want.”

NUCATS have another gaming event coming upon 7th March, as well as a night out to follow up their annual general meeting on the 20th March. You can find out all about these, as well as any other upcoming events, on the socials found on their linktree: https://linktr.ee/nucats
