AI and Fashion: How new technology is shaping the fashion industry

With Levi's trailing AI technology in its brand, what does this mean for the fashion industry?

The iconic denim brand Levi’s has recently announced that it will begin testing AI-generated models to improve diversity as, currently, most products advertised on the brand’s website can only be viewed on one model. So, rather than employing models of different body types, ages, and skin tones, the brand has instead elected to artificially create inclusivity within their brand by claiming that this will be more ‘sustainable’, without actually providing any information as to how this will be the case. Levi’s is, however, not the only fashion brand that is increasingly incorporating AI within their company and AI has already begun to transform (and disrupt) the world of fashion.

Artificial intelligence has become a game changer when it comes to marketing, which can be seen in the recent Barbie film campaign that used a viral AI selfie generator that accompanies the release of the trailer, and fashion will be no exception. Businesses will be able to use AI-powered marketing tools to analyse data so that they can adopt the best marketing strategies and target the right customers, which will allow businesses to save time and money. This technique will also allow businesses to be ahead of the game when it comes to identifying new trends and means that companies can reach even more customers and improve sales by ensuring that they are selling trending products.

Moreover, AI has already begun to transform the world of fashion design as businesses will be able to use AI algorithms that predict trends and analyse customer preferences to create designs that are more likely to be popular with their target audience. The appeal of this method is also that it can improve sustainability in an incredibly unsustainable industry by simply not producing styles that are not predicted to be trends thus resulting in less waste.

Although AI may seem like a positive addition to the fashion industry, it will in fact cause significant issues, such as the impact that it will have on employees within the industry. The fashion industry employs millions of people worldwide and the increased use of artificial intelligence will mean that many of these jobs are no longer needed, and Levi’s is not the only brand that will use AI to replace the human workforce. AI algorithms will be capable of doing the jobs of designers, marketers, models, and countless others within the fashion industry, which will not only impact the workers and the world of fashion, but also the economy.

Despite its flaws, artificial intelligence isn’t going anywhere, and it is something that we must accept as simply being a part of our modern world

Another consequence of the rise in AI technology is the loss of individualisation and the growth of homogenisation. AI has the ability to predict future trends and, as a result, in an effort to be more sustainable, brands will most likely reduce the variety in styles that they sell to reduce waste. But this will substantially reduce creativity and individuality in terms of fashion and will lead to everyone walking around dressed almost identically to one another. And, if sustainability is a genuine concern, there are other ways to shop sustainably whilst maintaining our sense of style: buying second-hand and vintage items.

Despite its flaws, artificial intelligence isn’t going anywhere, and it is something that we must accept as simply being a part of our modern world. However, the use of AI must be handled carefully within the fashion industry, and beyond so that it can be appropriately taken advantage of and not drive-up unemployment and kill style individuality.
