The 35 year old Scot scored 6-4-6-4 against Medvedev, the Russian player currently ranked No.7 in the world. The match was not an easy one, with blustery weather conditions setting the mood for Murray’s final. However, Murray has at least been able to boost his world ranking just in sight of the top fifty, yet there is still a way to go yet if he wishes to make one of the 32 seeded positions at the Grand Slams.
This is the first time since 2019 that Murray is competing for a title, and his time off was seen in his slow starts to both sets. He managed to pull back one break of serve in the opener, and in an exciting turn of events levelled for 3-3 in the second set, however Medvedev kept the ball consistently deep and took the lead with 5-4.
Murray had this to say about his loss: ‘It was an incredible week but obviously it didn’t finish the way I wanted… I had some amazing matches, and it was great to be back in a final. There are definitely some things to work on but I’m proud of the work my team and I have put in to get back to this stage.’
Andy Murray is now going straight to the Dubai Championships, to compete against his first opponent Hubert Hurkacz.
