Better late than never: a guide to joining societies mid-term

Are you still interested in joining societies? It's never 'too late'.

Allow me to set the scene: you're midway through the semester. You missed all the society taster sessions. You spent your freshers attending events such as the 'Sherlock Holmes Experience: Hunt for Moriarty", and the HSBC fraud awareness talk, and the Newcastle campus tour 2025. Which may I add, was not too dissimilar to the Newcastle campus tour 2024 - high hopes for the Newcastle campus tour 2026 regardless. Now you sit in your bed all day, unoccupied, thinking that maybe Sisyphus got off lightly. Freedom truly is a curse; perhaps school wasn't so bad. Does this sound all too familiar?

If so, do not worry, most students don't quite get round to ticking off their society bucket list in freshers week, you shouldn't be so harsh on yourself!

It's better to go than to live a life of regret.

Although it may not seem like it, the societies at Newcastle University allow students to join at any time throughout the semester, in fact, new members are always encouraged. Societies need you as much as you need them. There is, of course, the small membership fee, but you might be able to pop along for a one off freebie if you ask nicely enough (lucky you!).

And if you have been living under Sisyphus' Rock, Newcastle University has societies for every damn hobby and interest. Think of an idea, anything… A Capella, I hear you say - we got it. Oh, you think we should stop taking domestic flights from Newcastle to Bristol - I think that is a sensible suggestion, and one you can bring up at sustainable travel society. "But they haven't got anything along the lines of Middlesbrough and Medics and Multisport", I hear you cry. I don't mean to sound rude, but the president of the Middlesbrough Medics Multisport society just informed me that you would be sorely mistaken.

Whether you join Swift society or First Aid society, you are always welcome no matter the time of year. It's better to go than to live a life of regret. Who knows, one day you might be telling your kids about the time you put Taylor in the recovery position.
