With The Mandalorian in its sophomore season and the final season of the revived Star Wars: The Clone Wars series airing earlier this year, the Disney+ streaming service is slowly becoming a hive of action and heroics for Star Wars fans. With many new series already in the works, it appears that a familiar bounty hunter will also be taking centre stage in the near future.

SPOILERS for The Mandalorian Season 2

In an article from Deadline, there has reportedly been “persistent chatter […] that another Mandalorian-related project/spinoff, I hear possibly a Boba Fett miniseries, would film first, starting next week or later this month, with The Mandalorian Season 3 production coming after that.”

The report comes a week after Temuera Morrison (Aquaman) made a cameo appearance in The Mandalorian’s second season premiere, while Boba Fett’s armour featured as the McGuffin for the episode’s plot. Morrison has previously appeared in the Star Wars canon as Jango Fett – father of Boba Fett – in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), who had Boba created as an unaltered clone on the planet of Kamino. Since then, George Lucas has made retroactive edits to the original trilogy, including Morrison replacing the original voice acting for Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).

This isn’t the first time that a Boba Fett spin-off had been proposed. During the earlier days of Disney’s ownership of the Star Wars brand, a Boba Fett film had been in pre-production in line with the other “A Star Wars Story” spin-offs that ended after Solo (2018) became the first Star Wars film to flop at the box office.

A proposed Ob-Wan Kenobi film had also suffered the same fate before being revived as a mini-series for Disney+. Although the Kenobi miniseries has already suffered from creative disputes, reportedly leading to a rewrite of scripts and an inevitable delay to the series, the shift in direction towards streaming series isn’t a mark of Disney’s business savvy nature as much as it is one of common sense.

Additional spin-offs in the works include a Cassian Andor Rogue One (2016) spin-off, an animated spin-off of The Clone Wars following “The Bad Batch”, and a yet-undisclosed female-centred project written and being showrun by Leslyle Hedland (Creator of Netflix's Russian Doll). The Deadline article has also hinted at potential spin-offs for The Mandalorian’s Cara Dune, as well as one featuring Bo-Katan Kryze, the leader of Mandalore who made her first live-action appearance on The Mandalorian, portrayed by the character’s Clone Wars and Rebels voice actress Katee Sackhoff.

While the pandemic has slowed down production drastically, it hasn’t grinded to a halt just yet. As far as Disney and its fans are concerned, the wheels on the Star Wars bus just keep on spinning.
