Looking for a festive getaway this Christmas, but don’t want to break the bank? Bratislava and Vilnius might be your perfect picks.

According to Post Office Travel Money’s latest European Christmas Markets Barometer, Bratislava and Vilnius top the list of budget-friendly destinations for Christmas 2024. These two capitals, full of charm and tradition, offer magical winter experiences at nearly half the cost of pricier European cities like Copenhagen.

Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital ranks as the most affordable Christmas destination for UK travellers in 2024, with a total cost of just £510 for a two-night stay for two. This price includes flights, transfers, accommodation, meals, and market treats.

A short journey from Vienna Airport, Bratislava welcomes visitors with festive charm and vibrant culture. Situated on the Danube River, the capital combines the beauty of a European city with lower costs and fewer crowds. During the Christmas season, squares across the city come alive with twinkling lights, magical markets, and delicious festive treats.

The largest Bratislava Christmas market is in Hlavné Námestie (Main Square), while smaller markets can be found in other locations such as Hviezdoslavovo Square. Enjoy classics like glühwein, chimney cakes, and roasted sausages, alongside Slovak specialities like lokša (savoury pancakes with roasted pork or bryndza) and festive dishes such as duck or goose. Overlooking it all is Bratislava Castle, a stunning, often snow-dusted landmark that provides a quieter alternative to the busier Prague Castle or Schönbrunn Palace.

Vilnius, Lithuania

Trailing closely behind Bratislava, Vilnius has been ranked as the second-most affordable destination, with a mere 78p separating the two. Renowned for its festive spirit and affordability, Lithuania’s capital transforms in December, featuring enchanting Christmas markets and dazzling decorations.

The main market in Cathedral Square boasts a breathtaking Christmas tree. Visitors can explore timber chalets selling handcrafted gifts while savouring the sweet aroma of cinnamon cakes. A 15-minute walk away, Town Hall Square hosts a smaller market, complete with igloo-shaped stalls and another sparkling tree.

Families will love the Christmas train, which offers a scenic tour through Vilnius’ charming Old Town, connecting the two markets. The festive atmosphere extends beyond the markets, with life-sized Nativity scenes, lights, and seasonal decorations scattered throughout the city. For picture-perfect views of the market, head to the Cathedral Belfry for a stunning Instagram-worthy shot.

A Christmas of Dreams

Whether you choose Bratislava or Vilnius, these enchanting capitals promise unforgettable memories. With their festive charm, rich traditions, and affordability, both destinations prove you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy Christmas in Europe.
