With new game based films being released I think it's important to explore if they capture the original game's authenticity and whether game to film adaptations are successful enough to keep fandoms entertained.

If we look at films like Five Nights at Freddy's and Super Mario Bros both of these game to film adaptations did extremely well in their opening weekends, with Five Nights at Freddy's making $131 million and Super Mario Bros $146 million. I think because these productions already have a guaranteed audience from the original games fandom, whether its good or bad it is going to be a profitable.

For example Five Nights at Freddy's is already being titled one of the top 3 video game adaptations ever however, some of its pre-release predictions claimed it was going to be a flop due to rumours saying it will lack originality from the game. Super Mario Bros had similar reviews to Five Nights at Freddy's and both of the films were described with surprise at their success, but I don't think it's surprising, I think its predictable because of the fan loyalty and the desire for their favourite video games to come to life.

Super Mario Bros grossed a worldwide total of $1.36 Billion. It claimed the top spot of video-game to film adaptations after just one week

One of the most important things to capture in game film adaptations is the originality of the video game. I believe that film to game adaptations can work extremely well if they present authenticity within the film. The new release Five Nights at Freddy's did do well in the box office, but the general opinion is that many wouldn't go back and watch it again because of how much of the original storyline was missing. Also many film productions like Super Mario will remove a lot of violence, so the BBFC can make it a PG film, to increase viewership and make more money. This arguably removes a lot of the films authenticity and may upset the games fanbase creating bad press and film reviews.

With these ideas in mind, movies inspired by games can still work whether they get great reviews or not. Ultimately however, they get a better chance at being highly successful if they follow what their audience wants rather trying too hard to think on what will make the most money.
