As Justin Trudeau steps down as Canadian prime minister after seven years on the job, Mark Carney takes his place as the 24th Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party. With the formidable task of dealing with Trump’s trade war, who is Mark Carney, and is he up to the job?
With an impressive background in finance and economics, including being appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada and subsequently the Governor of the Bank of England. Not only was he appointed to serious roles within these banks after an education from Harvard and Oxford, and rising up through Goldman Sachs, but he dealt with major economic crises whilst in charge of these institutions.
While with the Bank of Canada, he navigated the global financial crisis of 2008 and led the Bank of England in the lead-up to Brexit and the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. His career thus far cements him as an economic powerhouse, but as a political newcomer is he a fit leader?

In his victory speech, he asserted his leadership qualities and clear view for the future of the country and its relationship with its sole neighbor. ‘I know these are dark days, dark days brought on by a country we no longer trust’, he said. Instilling hope and Canadian values by saying ‘We have to look after ourselves (...) and each other’.
These messages of hope and togetherness are exactly what the Canadian people, and the rest of the world, need in these unsettled times which gives me the hope that Canada will be in good hands with Mark Carney… at least until the next polls where he will have to succeed once again.
