This movie was one I didn’t even know that I needed. As the weather gets gloomier and naturally seasonal depression takes its toll – this is exactly what I needed.

This movie was so vibrant and refreshing, and although a little unrealistic in its tendencies to play up Dom and Jaz’s romantic escapades I enjoyed it nonetheless. I can’t deny that I was kicking my feet in the cinema waiting for it to unravel. Truly it was the epitome of two quirky souls meeting somewhere in the middle.

I not only loved the way in which it presented black creatives, their lives and their romances but also the characters themselves. The characters in the movie were multifaceted and so interesting in their own rights. I mean who wouldn’t love to staring at bums in a museum? After all “we know more about Neptune than we do the human anus”…

There is a sense of nostalgia and homeliness on the big screen that made it feel like I was truly there myself

I appreciated this aspect the most as these character were able to be unapologetically black, while simultaneously passionately creative. These were aspects that did not need to be mutually exclusive, which is much needed especially in an industry that seems to keep suggesting otherwise.

I truly believe this is why this movie felt like such a breath of fresh air. Like other shows such as ‘Chewing Gum’, seeing black characters in this multidimensional, quirky way outside of their suffering and simply their blackness is what I really love about this movie. Jaz is able to be quirky and be the main character in her own right.

As a whole the love of art and culture is so naturally intertwined in the movie, some scenes truly making me gasp at the vibrancy. Walking thought the streets of London, the hustle bustle and the music captured its essence so well. There is a sense of nostalgia and homeliness on the big screen that made it feel like I was truly there myself. Rye Lane truly lives up to the name its made for itself.
