2024 was an eventful year for UK politics, with Labour kicking the Tories out of office after a disastrous 14 years of Austerity, Brexit, and overall incompetence. This column will discuss the year ahead for British politics.

British politics will begin the year undoubtedly affected by the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Importantly for the UK, Trump has promised to “End the [Russia-Ukraine War] on day one”. Trumps support, or lack thereof, for Ukraine may prove crucial in the development of the war and may bring about an end to the conflict (just not on Ukrainian terms) sometime in 2025.

Since the October 7th attacks by Hamas in 2023, the Gazan death toll has reached unprecedented levels of over 45,000 due to Israeli retaliation. Many are hopeful that 2025 will finally be the year in which a ceasefire in Gaza can be achieved.

After much objection, the Labour government have committed to calling for a permanent and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, dependent upon the release of hostages by Hamas. The Government are still committed to Israel’s right to defend itself. However there is contention around the government’s commitment to upholding the ICC’s arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, who is charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In domestic news, this year’s local elections will be the first since Labours victory in July 2024. Voters will cast their ballot for four different metropolitan mayors across the UK, including electing the first mayors for Greater Lincolnshire and Hull and East Yorkshire.

The rise of Reform UK is a political phenomenon to note, the rise of the far right in the European Parliament, Trumps ascendency to the presidency and the 2024 riots across the UK have indicated the popularity of far-right populist parties worldwide. To combat the expected rise of Reform UK in the 2025 local elections, Labour must act swiftly to provide voters with tangible proof their policies are benefitting working people, else they face a light blue wave across the country.

Labour must act swiftly else they face a light blue wave in 2025.

2025 will also see the introduction of the disposable vape ban throughout England, Scotland and Wales and the much-anticipated return of Oasis with a summer tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? The best-selling album of the 1990s.
