The New Year is a perfect time to take up a new hobby for cold evenings where you need to decompress and take a break from work. Here are 3 crafting ideas to keep you busy in the winter months and (hopefully) for the rest of the year.

Crochet is a craft you can start for under £5 by taking a trip to John Lewis haberdashery section where there is all manner of yarn and crochet hooks. During the cold months, a homemade scarf is easy and the best way to stay creative and warm. ‘The Crochet Crowd’ website has free patterns and tutorials to get yourself started and Grainger Market, The Works, and Søstrene Grene also sell crochet supplies for a good price.

For a yearlong project, begin a 2025 junk journal full of receipts, metro tickets, postcards, pictures, doodles and more. The Works in Eldon Square sells a range of notebooks, and the rest is free - all you need is to adopt an obsessional hoarding problem. This not only allows time for scrapbooking creativity to flourish, but by the end of the year, you have physical documentation of many wonderful memories you can look back on forever.

Patchwork upcycling is cheap, sustainable, and a way of giving your old clothes new life. All you need is a needle, thread and some old clothes for this craft. Transform an old t-shirt by cutting out any design or shape from a different old piece of clothing (for example a heart) and then sewing it onto the t-shirt. For inspiration look at the ‘Magg’s Rags’ website and Pinterest where there will be a plethora of ideas ranging from simple stars to martini glasses. There are plenty of charity shops on Clayton Street where you can pick up old clothes to repurpose, and the possibilities of this craft are literally endless.
