In the most controversial sporting interview ever, Manchester United’s Ronaldo aired out all of his dirty laundry with Piers Morgan.

The transfer of Cristiano to Man United at the age of 36 last season created its own problems. Although being one of the greatest players to grace the game and being a goalscoring machine, would the inclusion of Ronaldo in the Manchester United team be of detriment to them.

If Ronaldo’s presence having a positive effect of Man U remained unclear to some, it was crystal clear to new manager Erik ten Hag that he would be surplus to requirements.

Ronaldo thus decided to air out his grievances with Piers Morgan, seeing the footage released days before the beginning of the World Cup; conveniently timed so that he most probably wouldn’t return to Manchester until a few days before the opening of the January transfer window.

It’s safe to say that he didn’t hold back.

The serial winner admitted that resigning for his old club was more “emotional than rational,” as he surfaced a conversation with ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson about whether he could sign for rivals Manchester City or not. Ronaldo told Piers that Sir Alex told him it was “impossible” for him to go to Man City, when that transfer was “close” to coming into fruition.

The condemnation of the facilities at Carrington, the Red Devils’ training ground, was another stick Ronaldo used to beat the club with. In his words, “nothing had changed” since he first left the club in 2009, thirteen years ago. “The progress was zero” in comparison with his times at Real Madrid and Juventus.

After Piers brought up the issue of young players’ mentality, the Portuguese international heavily criticised players such as Jadon Sancho for their apparently unprofessional behaviour. He stated that the younger generation don’t have the “hunger” and they “don’t care,” before signalling that advice goes in one ear and out the other with them.

Aside from these insights and somewhat petty, needless digs at his teammates, Cristiano chose to viciously vent out his issues with ten Hag and other high-ranking officials at the club.

He admitted that they attempted to force him out of the club and how “betrayed” he felt by their actions. To openly say you have “no respect” for your current manager, who decides whether or not you can play is a brave move and has put further put the question of his future at the club on a pedestal.

Ronaldo infamously stormed off the bench at Old Trafford and down the tunnel minutes before the final whistle against an impressive win over Spurs, as many people dubbed it an embarrassment for a legendary player to be brought on the pitch with a couple of minutes left to run the clock down.

To have a player speak out so openly against his club and teammates is beyond groundbreaking and bewildering. To display his chain of events to the entire world is one thing, but to slander his young teammates seemed needless and detrimental.

Does his stature as one of the greatest players ever and his current treatment at a football club give him the grounds to run his mouth off, or is he simply salty for not being the first name on the team sheet?
