Since their return to the Premier League this season, Steve Cooper’s men have struggled to adapt to life in the top flight, having only taken six points from their opening eleven games. When Jurgen Klopp’s Reds visited The City Ground last weekend, it seemed as though only one result would follow: a Liverpool win.

While Liverpool enjoyed the best of play over the first half, the Reds’ struggles to create chances this season was once again exemplified; with a tame Fabio Carvalho shot straight at Dean Henderson being the highlight of the first 45. Steve Cooper’s gameplan was clear from the start, to hit Liverpool on the counter-attack and win the ball high up the pitch. The Forest players executed the gameplan perfectly, as when Taiwo Awoniyi forced Joe Gomez into a mistake in his own half, the resulting free-kick led to the eventual match winner leading to Forest’s first victory over Liverpool in the Premier League since March 1996.

It seemed Liverpool were beginning to turn their season around with three wins on the bounce before their visit to Nottingham, including a most impressive one over Manchester city, Jurgen Klopp’s men looked as though they might have finally kicked out of first gear. But the optimism came quickly tumbling down as Liverpool tasted defeat to the relegation favourites, who, prior to their meeting with Liverpool had just one win to their name and were firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

This woeful display against Forest comes as the latest instalment of a string of sub-par performances for Jurgen Klopp’s men, with the start to the season being far from what many expected following a campaign which came agonisingly close to winning the quadruple last season. Having since qualified for the Champions League knockout stages, the Anfield faithful will be hoping the loss to Forest is the wake up call the Reds needed. With twelve games already gone this season, do Jurgen Klopp’s men have what it takes to play catch up to Manchester City and Arsenal, or will Klopp's seven-year curse come true for the third time in his managerial career?
