Easter holidays are around the corner which means it’s time to start eyeing up some nice travel destinations for the spring period. We’ll try to keep this within the realms of short-notice and low cost reason so no two-week stays in Australia or a cheeky trip to Tokyo on this list.

Scandinavia: Yes it’s still cold, it’s always cold, but what better time to visit Denmark, Sweden or Norway than the easter holidays. Spring is arriving to push out the truly ridiculous Scandinavian winter cold, but it hasn’t reached the peak tourist time of July and August, meaning a less crowded city and cheaper arrangements. The capitals, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, are all gorgeous cities to visit in terms of culture and architecture, whilst the unique geology of the three cities offers something different in each. Whether it’s the islands of Stockholm that feel tied together by roadways or the scale of the Oslofjord, there’s a lot to take in that makes Scandinavia an intriguing place to visit.

Amsterdam: Moving only slightly south, Amsterdam has many of the same draws as Scandinavia this time of year. It’s a truly beautiful city, the centre of town is walkable and is so distinctive, whilst interesting locations around the outer parts of town are easily accessible through great tram links, or perhaps you’d rather embrace the city’s icons and rent a bike for your journey. The climate in spring isn’t too frigid, with the wind being the one thing I would prepare for, hats beware. This location is particularly a particularly attractive prospect for Newcastle Uni students as you can get a ferry there from the Toon, as I did last year. It can be a cheaper option and is very convenient, just a short drive either side of the boat journey.

Edinburgh: Don’t have the time for a trip overseas? No worries, Newcastle is just a hop, skip and a jump away from Edinburgh, take a train and explore the city for a few days. With its old town upon the hill and its fascinating verticality, it’s a wonderful, if tiring, city to stroll around. Even if you don’t fancy staying the night, at just an hour and a half travel time, the train opens the door to a day trip. If you can’t cram everything in that one day you can always visit again to decompress during Easter break.

Even if you want to stay in Newcastle, why not take a day off and go to Tynemouth or visit a friend in Durham; a change of scenery is perfect to stave off those exams that make you feel trapped indoors. Look after yourself.
