Scottish indie-rock band Vistas released their new EP The Beautiful Nothing on 27th Jan. Fuelled by a concoction of bass and guitar, a listen to the EP will give you seventeen minutes worth of happiness as the band provide a series of upbeat tunes, easily accessible to fans of rock and of pop music. Of the five tracks, my favourite has to be the titular tune 'The Beautiful Nothing', a fast-paced song with frontman Prentice Robertson’s smooth vocals. However, if you listen carefully, the joyous rhythm of the track is in contrast with some of the lyrics. Robertson unearths fearful thoughts about the world and the unfortunate realisation that “try as you might they’re gonna forget you.” Though this may worry some listeners, the song reassures us with its calming chords and reminds us that “the beautiful nothing is beautiful.”
A close second for me has to be 'Back Of The Car' where the repetitive lyrics make for a catchy tune which is easy to sing along to. With lyrics appealing to you to “kindly make up your damn mind” the band’s straightforward outlook on the world shines through in their music and makes for an EP with the potential to rocket through the charts.
If you’re a fan of Sea Girls or Sports Team, then Vistas are a safe bet as they share the same catchy choruses which will play on loop in your head all day. So if you are already a Vistas fan, I have a lot of respect for you and hope you’re enjoying the new EP as much as I am. And if you’ve never listened to them before, they’re really worth taking a chance on- you may even get to see them live if you’ve got tickets to Kendal Calling this summer!
