Team Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup, golf’s pre-eminent event, following a week of tension at Bethpage Black in New York.

Throughout the tournament, there was much speculation on which team would be victorious. For the past five Ryder Cup tournaments, the team hosting the event had gone on to win; this year had the opposite outcome.

The tournament followed the same format as each year, with 4 foursomes matches on the Friday, and Saturday mornings, 4 fourballs matches on the afternoons, finishing with 12 singles matches on the Sunday.

The first 4 sessions saw Luke Donald’s squad in the lead, with an 11.5-4.5 advantage. Entering the final day needing 2.5 points to retain the trophy, and three points to win.

Tensions were high when Team Europe was faced with a fightback from USA

By Sunday, tensions were high when Team Europe were faced with a fightback from the USA; however, they stood their ground, finishing the day with a dramatic 15-13 victory.

Ludvig Aberg secured Europe’s first point by beating Patrick Cantlay 2&1, whilst Shane Lowry secured a half point from his birdie on the 18th hole against Russell Henley, both ensuring that Europe would retain the trophy. Tyrrell Hatton then tied with Collin Morikawa, reaching the 14.5 points required for victory, with Bob MacIntyre adding a late half point to extend the margin.

Despite strong performances from the USA side, with key performers being Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and Bryson DeChambeau, they didn’t quite make the cut.

Controversies rose around Rory McIlroy, who endured heckling each day from the crowd. He addressed this at the press conference by stating ‘’It was a rough week for us all. But at the same time, we shut them up by our performance.’’

Europe's composure under pressure ultimately earnt them the cup

Luke Donald added, 'It has been the most stressful 12 hours of my life. Shout-out to the Americans, Keegan [Bradley], his captaincy. I knew it would be tough. I didn't think they would be this tough on Sunday. They fought so hard, and all the respect to them.'

The USA gave their perspective through Keegan Bradley, who said, 'The boys really fought today. That was incredible. I didn't expect anything different. These guys are really an incredible group. The way they played the last two days, when we were way down - you wouldn't have known we were way down.'

The next Ryder Cup will take place in Ireland at Adare Manor in September 2027, but for now, Europe’s victory has marked a memorable, ambitious, and hard-fought triumph in Ryder Cup history, ending the trend of host-team wins. Europe’s composure under pressure ultimately earned them the cup; that’s not to say it was an easy win, as the Americans demonstrated a strong fight-back, keeping the contest vigorous and tense, leading to a dramatic European victory.
