Highly intense, idiotic and gore-filled...

You want a gore-filled, unsettling film about a family pet ape gone wild after catching rabies then this is a film for you.

Directed by Johannes Roberts, who is known for 47 Meters Down, Primate clings on to classic movie tropes and references. For example, it references Scream with Sydney Prescott having to repeatedly lock her car door to prevent the threat from entering.

I was surprised by the movie due to the main hook not being too original. I felt it to be like a sequel of the character of Gordy from Jordan Peele’s Nope. However, this film has some genuine tension and unsettling kills.

The film does hit a wall at some points, but overall it was highly intense and made me think of the dark side of pet influencers online.

Whilst there was no main lead that you can latch onto, I believe this strengthened the movie as ‘plot armour’ was genuinely non-existent which is a relief from a lot of current films in the media such as the MCU.

The classic frustration of the idiotic characters and lack of common sense did make me as an audience feel annoyed but overall, a good watch especially if you are a gore junkie and enjoyed other films such as Cocaine Bear, Nope and The Strangers
