Ferguson made his debut for Brighton in 2021 at just 16 years old under current West Ham manager Graham Potter. However, it would be the season after this when he would begin to make a name for himself, as he bagged an impressive 6 goals and 2 assists in 19 games for The Seagulls.
His output somewhat stagnated in his next season as he again struck home 6 goals in 27 games, which is still a respectable number of goals for a young striker learning his trade. His unfortunate injury problems began to plague his playing time in 2024, as he suffered a cruciate ligament tear which took him 147 days to recover from. His form hasn’t picked up since this last major injury, whilst he has also been a victim to multiple ankle injuries in his recovery, the most recent of which kept him out of action for nearly 40 days.
Now that his loyalty lies with West Ham, Ferguson will hope to start firing again with the leadership of the man who put his faith in him at 16 years old
Now that his loyalty lies with West Ham, Ferguson will hope to start firing again with the leadership of the man who put his faith in him at 16 years old. West Ham have struggled this season as they currently sit at 15th in the Premier League table and sacked ex-manager Julen Lopetegui in the process.
A tough run of fixtures in Graham Potter’s first few games has seen his West Ham career start slowly, with the lack of a striker being at the heart of the current problem. Summer signing Niclas Fullkrug has only played 9 league games for The Hammers and is currently out with a hamstring injury until April. West Ham’s mainstay striker, Michail Antonio, suffered a devastating car crash which will keep him out for the foreseeable future.
Of course, it can be said that it’s a risk to sign Ferguson because of his injury problems which has also been an issue for West Ham all season. However, it’s a risk which had to be taken due to the potential for him to have a resurgence in prolific goal-scoring, and the lack of a consistent striker up front. Overall, West Ham fans will be cautiously optimistic about the prospect of having Evan Ferguson lead the line for their club.
